Digital Tachograph

The digital tachograph, which is necessary to record the driving time of trucks, lorries and buses drivers was born from the need to replace the previous analog system, becoming of easy counterfeiting from the users during the time, tampering the schedules surveys and creating serious distortions of competition in the market of road (on about 1 million vehicles tested in 2002, were found about 70,000 frauds or attempted frauds). Moreover, problems of use and reliability, especially in reading the data on the disks used by analogue tachographs made also complex controls by the competent authorities.

The digital tachograph has two basic elements for its use:

  • The drive vehicle is a device similar to a car radio or a CD player, which includes two smart-card readers, a selector for manual entry, a screen for displaying data and a small printer;
  • A smart-card
connected securely to the vehicle sensors, the digital tachograph records in its memory the data relating to the use of the vehicle for a period of one year. In particular, are detected: the identity of the driver, driving times and time-out periods, the driving mode (individually or as a team).
The device also records:• identification data of the vehicle (to life);• distance traveled;• the malfunctions and failures (for one year);• speed held in the last 24 hours of use of the vehicle.
Each type of tachograph card has its own function and a specific use depending on if it belongs to the driver, to the company, the supervisory authorities or to the workshop.
